Birth Plan

In childbirth class this week, our instructor told us that the more detailed the birth plan someone has, the more likely they will have a c-section. Which I've seen to be true during rotations. You've got the girl who has this perfect birth all planned out in great detail who is doomed to have the worst experience ever.

Aaron and I, on the other hand, have a simple birth plan. It is two-parts. The first I came up with and the second he added.

1.) Give birth via whatever means necessary to a healthy baby.
2.) Complete step 1 in a hospital.

If we can accomplish those 2 steps, we will be ecstatic. Our hospital has a 40% caesarean rate. Okay. I'm not one of those who wants to struggle towards a vaginal delivery no matter what. If doc gets the slightest feeling that things are headed south, I want this baby out quickly. And I know there are lots of opinions on this, but the caesareans I assisted on were many times a lot less scary and painful than the vaginal deliveries.

My very worst fear is that I will have to be induced at 42 weeks after suffering through the hottest summer ever, labor painfully for 48 hours with an epidural that is not effective, and then end up with a c-section. But if that's what it takes for my baby Gil to make a grand entrance, so be it.

My showers are coming up so I'm sure I'll get loaded up with all of the most horrific birth stories possible. Why women do this to each other, I'll never understand...

  1. Hi Amber! We are due in four weeks and our birth plan is the same as yours. To give birth via whatever means necessary to have a healthy baby and have it in a hospital. Geoff and I just want a healthy baby girl and I don't care how I give birth as long as she comes out healthy and ready for lots of cuddles and love! I hope you have some wonderful baby showers we loved ours they were so much fun!

  2. Your birth plan reminds me of my cousin's "mission statement" for his wedding.
    1) get married
    2) have fun
    nice and easy.

  3. People DO like to scare the crap out of you, don't they? Why is that?
I love your approach - go with the flow. It'll work out beautifully. For us, a c-section means I get 2 more weeks home with her, so I wouldn't mind it one bit except for the fact that I don't want her going into distress so that she can come out that way...
Showers coming up! Fun fun fun!!!!

  4. First of all, you know I think you are hilarious, but now I think you are smart as all get out too! You have saved me from writing on this subject, as I can now direct all my blog readers to your post! I couldn't agree with you more on this subject...go with the flow, be healthy, keep baby healthy, and do it all in a hospital!!

So exciting about your showers...hope Gil continues to treat you well!

  6. Love the birth plan, short, simple, and to the point. My c-section was awesome and I highly recommend them.

  7. I was bummed when I was told to head straight to the hospital for my c-section because I actually wanted to experience labor. However, in hindsight c-section with no laboring is totally the way to go. My recovery was so fast, I was preg checking cows within 3 weeks afterwards. Adam agrees except next time he wants it scheduled so he doesn't have to make the mad dash!

Meet Our Little Miracle, Paisley Kate

The post I have been waiting 2 years to write is finally here and I can't really believe it. On Saturday, I woke up at 8:30 a.m. with BAD contractions. By the 2nd one, I knew I was in "real" labor. They were SO different than the braxton-hicks. I got out of bed and decided that I'd take a bath, until water ran down both legs. The pain after that got pretty unbearable immediately and I was having contractions every 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. So, I called Aaron at work to tell him it was "the big day". He decided I was kidding until I nearly leapt through the phone to wring his neck. :) We got to the hospital an hour later and I was dilated to a 4 and having very active contractions. They quickly got me moved to an L&D room. I got my epidural ( AMAZING - we'll talk about this in its own post soon) at a 6 and then my doctor broke my water. (Apparently at home, it had just leaked a pocket of fluid). After he broke my water, labor started picking up

The Resurrection

So here we are.  It's now a blog graveyard.  The followers have long since moved on and infertility is something that I've somewhat put in the past (only considering I don't want any more kids).  So why am I here and writing again?  What's the purpose?   This was my safe place.  It was where I came when everything seemed much too hard and I needed to feel comfort.  I wanted to express myself in a venue that others would reassure me and even understand me.  I still love and have always loved this blog.  It guided me during some of the hardest years of my life, dealing with infertility and miscarriage. And you know... I guess it will help me again now.  Because life is freaking TOUGH.  You know the phrase "I've went through Hell and back"?  Yeah, I feel that in my soul now.  I could have a blowout in the middle lane of the highway during rush hour traffic, manage to pull over my car on the side and call for roadside assistance without my pulse increasing ev

I'm Going to Let You in on a Little Secret

My dear blog readers, Those of you who know me well know that I do not keep secrets. It's actually physically impossible for me to keep a secret. So, it's going to really surprise many of you to find out that I've been staying silent about something pretty big. So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to the little miracle that came into our lives 13 weeks ago: We wanted to keep it to ourselves for a while to make sure things went okay this time. It's been a very terrifying 13 weeks and we are just now starting to feel that things could actually go well. We feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant with this baby and we are so grateful for every minute. To my friends who are still battling infertility , I'm not even sure where to start. You've been there with me through it all. You've held my hand and given me a shoulder to cry on when times are tough. You always know the right things to say because you've been there before. And you pray and
