Parenting 101

Let these confessions serve as a learning tool for all of you out there striving to be a better parent or as comfort to those of you making your own mistakes. Here goes Round 2.

I locked both of my kids in the car on a very warm summer day when Paisley was barely two and Graham was no more than two months old. I had to have Aaron bring his keys home from the clinic 10 minutes away so I could get them out. Luckily, Paisley thought I was just being silly and Graham slept through most of it. They were super sweaty when I got it unlocked finally and I felt terrible!!!

I sometimes skip baths if we get home late and the kids are already asleep or very tired. Even if they did get really dirty. And sometimes I can't recall when Graham's last bath was so I baby wipe him down.

My kids have both rolled off the couch as babies. For some strange reason, they always learn to roll for the first time while laying on a piece of furniture that I have temporarily walked away from. Not excited about that milestone and it always happens too early!

They have both chewed on rawhides while teething. Sounds gross but it works really well. Both have found them without my help and then decided they love them. I swear the dogs bring them to the babies.

I have let them wear the same clothes two days in a row. My excuse for Paisley is she has a major opinion on her clothes and it becomes a Pick your Battle situation in taking stuff off. So she wears it again if we won't be seeing the same people. :)

On numerous occasions, I have let her pull all of her wipes out of their container just because it takes her awhile. This kid has SO much energy it's ridiculous. And I'm not 20 anymore.

Worst of all, I gave my newborn son meningitis. I was unlucky enough to contract a virus at 38 weeks pregnant, infect the rest of the family, go into labor and have my c-section while recovering from said illness and then give it to him.
He could have even gotten it while in the "safety" of my uterus. He had to have wished for a better family from the start. :)

Please share more of your awesome mom moments. I have loved reading them and I have gotten a lot of feedback from people who enjoyed them too!

  1. I regularly let Gwen pull all the wipes out of the container, or all the tissues from the box. The cutest thing is to watch her stuff them all back in.

There are also two cupboards of dishes (utensils, and plastic containers) that I don't bother stopping her from going through, even if it does mean that the contents sometimes end up in unexpected places. This morning we found the egg beater behind the rocking chair in her room.

I am trying to teach her that big-people books are not toys (though when she does play with them she is extremely good and gentle for the most part), but since our living room has 8 book cases, which means 8 shelves of books at easy reach, and sometimes I just don't have the energy to stop her from pulling all of them off into a great big pile, even though I know I should be consistent about telling her that they are not toys.

We've gotten into the habit of throughout the day snacking. Joel and I snack throughout the day, I have a hard time justifying that she can't while we can.

  2. I have a baby safety lock on our kitchen cabinet below the sink (where we keep some cleaning supplies and stuff) and then a safety lock on the bottom bathroom cabinet (where there is also toxic things for children). They are never locked. Yup...

  3. Mine are currently awake and crying in their cribs so I can catch up on fb and blogs before I begin my day...mother of the year here!

Meet Our Little Miracle, Paisley Kate

The post I have been waiting 2 years to write is finally here and I can't really believe it. On Saturday, I woke up at 8:30 a.m. with BAD contractions. By the 2nd one, I knew I was in "real" labor. They were SO different than the braxton-hicks. I got out of bed and decided that I'd take a bath, until water ran down both legs. The pain after that got pretty unbearable immediately and I was having contractions every 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. So, I called Aaron at work to tell him it was "the big day". He decided I was kidding until I nearly leapt through the phone to wring his neck. :) We got to the hospital an hour later and I was dilated to a 4 and having very active contractions. They quickly got me moved to an L&D room. I got my epidural ( AMAZING - we'll talk about this in its own post soon) at a 6 and then my doctor broke my water. (Apparently at home, it had just leaked a pocket of fluid). After he broke my water, labor started picking up

The Resurrection

So here we are.  It's now a blog graveyard.  The followers have long since moved on and infertility is something that I've somewhat put in the past (only considering I don't want any more kids).  So why am I here and writing again?  What's the purpose?   This was my safe place.  It was where I came when everything seemed much too hard and I needed to feel comfort.  I wanted to express myself in a venue that others would reassure me and even understand me.  I still love and have always loved this blog.  It guided me during some of the hardest years of my life, dealing with infertility and miscarriage. And you know... I guess it will help me again now.  Because life is freaking TOUGH.  You know the phrase "I've went through Hell and back"?  Yeah, I feel that in my soul now.  I could have a blowout in the middle lane of the highway during rush hour traffic, manage to pull over my car on the side and call for roadside assistance without my pulse increasing ev

I'm Going to Let You in on a Little Secret

My dear blog readers, Those of you who know me well know that I do not keep secrets. It's actually physically impossible for me to keep a secret. So, it's going to really surprise many of you to find out that I've been staying silent about something pretty big. So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to the little miracle that came into our lives 13 weeks ago: We wanted to keep it to ourselves for a while to make sure things went okay this time. It's been a very terrifying 13 weeks and we are just now starting to feel that things could actually go well. We feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant with this baby and we are so grateful for every minute. To my friends who are still battling infertility , I'm not even sure where to start. You've been there with me through it all. You've held my hand and given me a shoulder to cry on when times are tough. You always know the right things to say because you've been there before. And you pray and
