Takes a Rocket Scientist...

If there's one thing I've figured out about babies, it's that you can't possibly explain anything that they do and/or don't do.  Example 1:  My sweet girl slept through the night really well several nights in a row, like 3-4 weeks ago.  It was nice and I enjoyed it, but she decided that it was overrated.  Since then, she wakes up usually once around 4 am to eat, but sometimes she wakes up 2-3 times.  Not cool.

I've tried to work out what the secret recipe is to getting her to sleep through the night.  Perfectly timed nursing, comfy pajamas, sound machine on different settings and various volumes, space heater, naps during the day/evening, a variety of binkys, warm baths, solid foods, etc.

What I've determined from this month long "science" experiment is that none of it makes a single bit of difference.  The nights I swear she'll be SO exhausted and is definitely going to sleep through the night, she wakes up a ton.  Then there are nights like last night...  She fell asleep at 9:30 (earlier than usual), didn't eat a ton last night before bed, slept without her binky, sound machine off.  Guess what happened?  She slept 9 hours straight, ate and then went back to sleep.

Hmmm.....

I don't get it.  This baby is crazy.  She just does whatever she wants and I have to try to keep up.  This is why you don't wait until you're 30 to have a baby.  I don't have the energy for this!  And what's the deal with the way she won't even bother to open her eyes in the middle of the night to look at me???  It's like she thinks it's my idea to hang out with her in the night, when she was the one who woke me up!  The child looks like she's fast asleep but is whining.  And if you try to ignore the whining, it will sometimes stop, but often it just keeps going for way too long.  And I can't sleep through it.  So, I trudge my way across the house to her room.

But it's all worth it because she smells so good, and she's all cuddly in her soft pj's.  It's amazing how she'll just curl into me when I get her out of her crib.  And I love when she places her hand on my chest.  So sweet.

There is no amount of education or experience in the world that can prepare you for being a mommy.  It's all hands-on training!  :)

  1. I'm so glad to know that Zachary's not the only one who can't seem to make up his mind about sleeping. It varies so much from night to night, and just when I think I have him figured out, he changes the plan. Ugggh! I've had a post brewing in my mind about this for weeks, but I can't seem to collect my thoughts. You've taken the words right out of my mouth!!!!

  3. Yes, yes, and yes! If there's one word that decsribes Sofia, it's INCONSISTENT. What works one day, doesn't work the next. But those smiles are worth it all. =)

  4. same problem here! 6 wake ups one night, only 1 the next, and then 5 the next. Napping nightmare one day and then perfect the next. I certainly was never warned that baby sleep issues would be so frustrating!!!!

  5. Okay, I'm a total lurker (came here by way of Catie) but I had to comment. The HARDEST thing for me to learn when I first had my son was that A+B does not always = C. WHAT?! The inconsistency of a baby can be so overwhelming at times, but sooner or later (and it sounds like you figured this out sooner than me) you just have to throw your hands up and realize you can't control their sleeping. Good luck with the sleeping issues, it sounds like you have a great attitude about it all!

  6. OMG, I could have written this myself right now!! Geez, Jax has really thrown me for a loop and last night was a NIGHTMARE! He did the same exact thing as your little one - slept through the night beautifully for like 4 nights in a row. I thought, "Yay, we got this!" Then, back to the old routine of waking up anywhere between 1 and 6 times and driving me absolutely crazy because I can't seem to sleep in any kind of routine myself! Last night was a CONSTANT waking up night, I mean every 2 hours. And, frankly, I don't think he's too cute every 2 hours in the middle of the night...lol! I was SO glad to read this this morning and to read the comments, to know I'm not alone. I have to go to work now, but this made my frustration with the last night easier to deal with:). Thanks for posting!

  8. Sometimes I think e sleeps better at night when she sleeps more during the day which makes no sense whatsoever in my mind. And she totally does that whining but not really awake but not really asleep either. What does that even mean? Usually I can get away with just giving her her pacifier and going back to bed that may not work with p. I remember my good friend always said babies follow their own rules which is so true.

Meet Our Little Miracle, Paisley Kate

The post I have been waiting 2 years to write is finally here and I can't really believe it. On Saturday, I woke up at 8:30 a.m. with BAD contractions. By the 2nd one, I knew I was in "real" labor. They were SO different than the braxton-hicks. I got out of bed and decided that I'd take a bath, until water ran down both legs. The pain after that got pretty unbearable immediately and I was having contractions every 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. So, I called Aaron at work to tell him it was "the big day". He decided I was kidding until I nearly leapt through the phone to wring his neck. :) We got to the hospital an hour later and I was dilated to a 4 and having very active contractions. They quickly got me moved to an L&D room. I got my epidural ( AMAZING - we'll talk about this in its own post soon) at a 6 and then my doctor broke my water. (Apparently at home, it had just leaked a pocket of fluid). After he broke my water, labor started picking up

The Resurrection

So here we are.  It's now a blog graveyard.  The followers have long since moved on and infertility is something that I've somewhat put in the past (only considering I don't want any more kids).  So why am I here and writing again?  What's the purpose?   This was my safe place.  It was where I came when everything seemed much too hard and I needed to feel comfort.  I wanted to express myself in a venue that others would reassure me and even understand me.  I still love and have always loved this blog.  It guided me during some of the hardest years of my life, dealing with infertility and miscarriage. And you know... I guess it will help me again now.  Because life is freaking TOUGH.  You know the phrase "I've went through Hell and back"?  Yeah, I feel that in my soul now.  I could have a blowout in the middle lane of the highway during rush hour traffic, manage to pull over my car on the side and call for roadside assistance without my pulse increasing ev

I'm Going to Let You in on a Little Secret

My dear blog readers, Those of you who know me well know that I do not keep secrets. It's actually physically impossible for me to keep a secret. So, it's going to really surprise many of you to find out that I've been staying silent about something pretty big. So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to the little miracle that came into our lives 13 weeks ago: We wanted to keep it to ourselves for a while to make sure things went okay this time. It's been a very terrifying 13 weeks and we are just now starting to feel that things could actually go well. We feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant with this baby and we are so grateful for every minute. To my friends who are still battling infertility , I'm not even sure where to start. You've been there with me through it all. You've held my hand and given me a shoulder to cry on when times are tough. You always know the right things to say because you've been there before. And you pray and
