2009: The Year of the Stirrups

As I was reflecting on 2009 today, not too many great feelings came to mind. We had a couple of incredible vacations (thank you, swine flu for making Mexico so inexpensive...) and I'm sure we have a lot of other things to be thankful for (slipping my mind right now). But of course what really stands out is our healthcare issues.

One of the reasons it stands out is that I have a gigantic stack of medical receipts to give our accountant for taxes. Which reminds me of how much we've had done this year. And it all leads me to thinking about "stirrups", since that's where I've spent much of my time.

When I say stirrups, you might think of the bone in the inner ear (also called stapes)...

Or the kind we use for horseback riding...

Or if you're an '80s child, maybe you think of this fashion statement...
But this is what I picture.
And how could I not? I keep record of my "fun little infertility" story so that I may one day torture our "hard-earned" child with it, so I was able to count the number of times I was in stirrups in 2009. Want to take a guess?
31 times. I used to actually complain about and dread my yearly pap smear. I was such a silly girl! But I went for that yesterday and it was a walk in the park. It was hard not to ask, "is that all?" You mean you don't need to ultrasound me, inject me with anything, draw blood, shoot dye into my ovaries, inflict pain in general?

I'm currently trying to remind myself that 2009 made me stronger. I'm a tougher person in a better marriage. And I'm going to be a fantastic mom if I don't say so myself...
But I did make one New Year's resolution this year: to avoid the stirrups as much as possible. (Unless I need to do it 50 times this year to get our baby, cuz then of course I will...)

  1. I agree-yearly pap smears are a walk in the park! So sad but so true!

  2. Really? You picture the table with foot cups? Because I sooooo picture the black pants from my fashion days in the 80s. Those things were AWESOME. Almost as cool as the pegged pants and layered socks.

  3. WOW! 31 times huh?? Well.. your post made me add up (in my head) all the times that I was in the fun little contraption this past year.. I beleive it falls somewhere around 12-15 times. So, yeah.. you beat me! =)

The most annoying thing to me is how my clinic puts the "fuzzy leopard print" cover over each stirrup.. as if that somehow makes it 'fun' or 'cool' to stick your feet there. Makes me wanna puke. =/

Anywho.. I hope that if you find yourself in the land of stirrups this year.. it is because you are fixing to watch your little baby squirm around on the monitor!! =)

  4. I can completely relate with you, I felt like 2007 all the way to 2009 I was constantly up in the stirrups as well.
2010 Is going to be a better year for you. I can feel. Prayers coming your way!

  6. Ugh, I do not even want to think about how many times I got into those stirrups.

Ultimately, it'll be all worth it though, no matter what you have to endure.

We got a nice fat refund last year from our IVF reciepts, which lead to a fancy trip to San Fran. Kind of wish we had the cash now, but at the time we needed the retail/vacation therapy.

Here's hoping 2010 is really efficient in the stirrup department for ya!

Meet Our Little Miracle, Paisley Kate

The post I have been waiting 2 years to write is finally here and I can't really believe it. On Saturday, I woke up at 8:30 a.m. with BAD contractions. By the 2nd one, I knew I was in "real" labor. They were SO different than the braxton-hicks. I got out of bed and decided that I'd take a bath, until water ran down both legs. The pain after that got pretty unbearable immediately and I was having contractions every 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. So, I called Aaron at work to tell him it was "the big day". He decided I was kidding until I nearly leapt through the phone to wring his neck. :) We got to the hospital an hour later and I was dilated to a 4 and having very active contractions. They quickly got me moved to an L&D room. I got my epidural ( AMAZING - we'll talk about this in its own post soon) at a 6 and then my doctor broke my water. (Apparently at home, it had just leaked a pocket of fluid). After he broke my water, labor started picking up

The Resurrection

So here we are.  It's now a blog graveyard.  The followers have long since moved on and infertility is something that I've somewhat put in the past (only considering I don't want any more kids).  So why am I here and writing again?  What's the purpose?   This was my safe place.  It was where I came when everything seemed much too hard and I needed to feel comfort.  I wanted to express myself in a venue that others would reassure me and even understand me.  I still love and have always loved this blog.  It guided me during some of the hardest years of my life, dealing with infertility and miscarriage. And you know... I guess it will help me again now.  Because life is freaking TOUGH.  You know the phrase "I've went through Hell and back"?  Yeah, I feel that in my soul now.  I could have a blowout in the middle lane of the highway during rush hour traffic, manage to pull over my car on the side and call for roadside assistance without my pulse increasing ev

I'm Going to Let You in on a Little Secret

My dear blog readers, Those of you who know me well know that I do not keep secrets. It's actually physically impossible for me to keep a secret. So, it's going to really surprise many of you to find out that I've been staying silent about something pretty big. So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to the little miracle that came into our lives 13 weeks ago: We wanted to keep it to ourselves for a while to make sure things went okay this time. It's been a very terrifying 13 weeks and we are just now starting to feel that things could actually go well. We feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant with this baby and we are so grateful for every minute. To my friends who are still battling infertility , I'm not even sure where to start. You've been there with me through it all. You've held my hand and given me a shoulder to cry on when times are tough. You always know the right things to say because you've been there before. And you pray and
